Contemporary Art
ERRO Gudmundur

Erró's art can certainly be typecast as Pop Art, with bold comic-strip characters taken from dozens of cultural resources the art draws close comparison with propaganda posters. Erró embodies many pastiches and styles of other 20th century artists such as Picasso, Léger, Disney and Dalí. These are presented in such a way that they portray something of a hallmark for Erró, as the miscellany of pictorial languages fill the canvas with wilful abandon. This amalgamation epitomises both the playful nature of the subject matter and the deep contrasts in both colour and the images own content, as if spilling over with fullness.

Erró was born In Iceland in 1932. He is an Icelandic Pop artist whose work has encompassed paintings, drawings, collage, printmaking, sculpture and film. Erró travelled the world spending time in Europe, North and South America, the Soviet Union and the Far East.

His early works comprise a late surrealist style hinting at the cosmic entities of Roberto Matta but later his interpretation of postmodern life combined with comic book aesthetics place his work shoulder-to-shoulder with artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist.

Throughout the years his commentary on contemporary life has been consistent and has cemented his reputation. He has exhibited in major galleries all over the world including the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, in Paris and the Hong-Kong Arts Centre. In 2000 Erró was elected to receive the Honorary Artists Stipend by the Icelandic Parliament and in the summer of 2001 a museum was inaugurated in Reykjavik.
